Raising Pygmy Goats

Pygmy goats are one of the popular breeds that are domesticated. These animals originated in the African continent and were imported into the US during the 1950s. They are very affable even with kids and have commercial value as well. The mohair, meat and milk of the goat are sold by people who raise them for business purposes.
African Pygmy and Nigerian Dwarf goats are the two popular breeds that can be raised either for meat or for milk. The Nigerian pygmy goat weighs about seventy-five pounds and is anywhere between 17 and 20 inches tall. They produce about 1 milk quart a day and this comfortably suffices the requirements of a small family. The African pygmy goat is generally raised for petting zoos, and to produce milk with lot of fat content.
When you raise pygmy goats, you should at least bring two of them home as they roam around in herds. Otherwise, if the goat feels lonely, he would bleat all the time due to boredom.
You cannot house the pygmy goats inside your home. You need to provide a ventilated and well-lit barn exclusively for the goats. These animals do not like sleeping on the ground and hence, require raised benches to rest.
For just two goats, the area of the barn should be minimum 30 X 40 sq. ft. You should secure this area with an appropriate fence so that they can roam around comfortably. Feed your goats at least twice a day with commercial feed bought from a pet store.
